“We are back!”
With that declaration on Saturday, March 19, ISRI Chair Gary Champlin opened the board meetings and association gatherings ahead of ISRI2022. The recycling industry’s largest convention and exposition is March 21-24 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. This is the first in-person convention in three years.
“Despite COVID and all that we have been through these past couple of years, it has been an amazing experience,” says Champlin, general manager of Champlin Tire Recycling. He notes the quarterly membership figures show more members have joined ISRI than ever before in a three-month period.
Craig Litman, vice president and CFO of Texas Recycling, delivered a safety message about the importance of situational awareness when operating forklifts. Convention Chair Stephen Moss, vice president of Stanton A. Moss Inc., noted that 4,000-plus people preregistered before the start of ISRI2022, and predictions call for about 5,700 attendees by the end of the week. “It’s great to be back with our ISRI family,” he states.
ISRI President Robin Wiener says the exhibition hall is sold out. “There are lots of new exhibitors, lots of new attendees—the excitement is there and it’s going to be a great week,” she says. The board acknowledged Wiener for being named the newest recipient of the Gulf Coast Region’s lifetime achievement award, the Israel Proler Award, which is named after one of the inventors of the Prolerizer, a breakthrough device in metal recycling.
The board recognized new ISRI staffers Brandon Brooks, accountant; Fred Fischer, assistant vice president of international trade; Todd Foreman, director of law enforcement outreach; and Teresa Perrell, director of meetings.
Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, ISRI is supporting two charities: Doctors Without Borders and Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, which has served 1 million meals to displaced families across Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Moldova, and Hungary.
