ISRI’s 2021 Spring Committee and Board of Directors Meetings began virtually on Thursday, May 6. Most of the meetings are open and free for all ISRI members to attend through Friday, May 14. Here are some highlights from the Shredders Committee meeting that occured on Tuesday, May 11, and all the meetings that occured on Wednesday, May 12.
Shredders Committee
The Shredders Committee got things rolling with an update on the Shredder Wear Parts tariff and whether the Biden administration may implement an exemption process. There was also a conversation on the 2021 Shredder Operations Forum Planning. Upcoming regulations on hydrofluorocarbons were reviewed, and an update from the VOC Emissions Working Group was provided. The committee discussed inbound material source control of propane bottles and feedstock. There was also a call asking for divisions and subcommittees to work on existing specifications or consider specific specifications that don’t currently exist such as zorbas, zurik, and sensor-sorted material.
Convention Committee
A detailed report of ISRI2021 was provided during the Convention Committee meeting on Wednesday, May 12. In total, the event featured 33 educational sessions with more than 90 speakers and moderators. Feedback from the sessions was overall very positive. Members were less pleased with the virtual exhibit hall, noting it is challenging to network with customers on virtual platforms. Members made several suggestions on how experiences from the 2021 virtual meeting could apply to future in-person events, particularly on the distribution of session content. Communications Committee
For the first time ever, ISRI provided in-depth, same-day coverage of its convention, Vice President of Communications Mark Carpenter announced during the Communications Committee meeting. More than 50 articles were published during the convention. ISRI published roughly the same amount of articles leading up to the convention to promote, highlight and tie into ISRI2021 sessions. All articles were shared on social media. ISRI delivered a special-edition e-newsletter to over 9,000 people during the convention. The association produced daily videos that included highlights and announcements.
Tire & Rubber Division
The majority of the Tire & Rubber Division meeting was spent clarifying the Board of Directors’ May 6 decision to disband the Scrap Tire Processors Chapter, and to move its functions and operations into the Tire Division. The committee reviewed key aspects of the reorganization, including:
- Members whose primary chapter is Scrap Tire will be transferred into their respective geographic chapters.
- Chapter President Neal Frey, vice president of market development at Entech, will be a director at large until the position sunsets in spring 2022.
- Each geographic chapter is requested to waive its dues for members transferring from Scrap Tire for the remainder of 2021.
Trade Committee
David Eaton, ISRI’s director of government relations, shared with the Trade Committee that ISRI is facilitating an upcoming series of meetings between members of Congress and their constituent ISRI companies that are affected by ongoing global shipping delays. ISRI is urging Congress to update the Federal Shipping Act to give the Federal Maritime Commission more effective authorities. ISRI hopes to get more federal agencies involved to loosen the shipping logjam and seeks congressional hearings on the matter. The committee also discussed how ISRI can best serve its membership in non-shipping matters related to global movement of recycled materials.
