Smart camera and artificial intelligence company Compology announced July 14 that standards and global movement-building organization B Lab named it to B Lab’s Best for the World list, which recognizes corporations that demonstrate social and environmental responsibility.

The list recognizes Certified B Corporations (B Corps) globally that have achieved the highest verified scores in the five impact areas evaluated on the B Impact Assessment (BIA): community, customers, environment, governance, and workers. Each year B Lab releases its Best for the World list to highlight the B Corps that scored in the top 5% on the BIA. Compology’s recognition in the Workers category among companies with 10-49 employees, according to the award criteria, acknowledges “exemplary employee-friendly practices, such as ownership opportunities, job flexibility, and fair-chance hiring policies.”

Compology CEO Jason Gates says that with B Lab’s mission so closely aligned with Compology’s, it is an honor to be recognized. “We’re proud to join a class of like-minded companies that leverage business strategies to promote social good,” he says.

In June, B Lab awarded Compology its B Corp certification. Companies must re-certify every three years to retain B Corp standing. B Corp has no legal status, unlike a benefit corporation such as Kickstarter.

Compology’s smart AI camera modernizes recycling infrastructure by identifying contaminants in recycling Dumpsters before they enter loads in a processing facility. Compology’s technology also measures and tracks production, providing users with data to plan pickups more efficiently to reduce carbon emissions. The company says this saves customers almost $2,000 per Dumpster per year. “Beyond its dedication to sustainability, Compology’s commitment to supporting employees and creating a positive workplace culture further contributed to its top BIA score,” the company states.
