The devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria have left many in need of food, shelter, clothing and other basic necessities.

Recognizing the need for support in the region, the ISRI Executive Committee, led by Chair Brian Henesey, authorized $20,000 in donations to two groups on the ground in the affected region to assist in recovery efforts. ISRI has decided to donate $10,000 each to the groups World Central Kitchen (founded by Jose Andres, ISRI’s 2021 General Session speaker; his team is producing 10,000 meals to earthquake victims) and AFAD (Turkey’s official Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency).

“Our thoughts are with all who have been impacted by the devastating earthquakes and ISRI and the recycled materials industry wanted to help,” said ISRI President Robin Wiener. “In a time of such extreme loss, it has been encouraging to see so many members of the recycled materials industry collectively help support the needs of so many during this time.”

In addition to the donations provided by ISRI, many of our member companies have also provided support to those impacted, including:

  • Allied Alloys in Houston held a large clothing and supply drive with proceeds donated directly to the Turkish Embassy in Houston.
  • International Paper contributed $50,000 to earthquake relief efforts.
  • Kramer Metals supported through monetary and clothing donations to a local temple collecting donations.
  • Schnitzer Steel, Inc. donated $100,000 to relief efforts and is matching employee donations up to $50,000.
  • Sims Limited made a sizable donation to several charities involved in relief efforts in Turkey.

“The recycled materials industry joins in the global response to the devastation experienced in Turkey and Syria,” said ISRI Chair Brian Henesey. “We stand with those impacted as they work to rebuild their lives and livelihoods following this natural disaster.”

Our continued thoughts are with the people of Turkey and Syria.
